The compiler owns the following letter, written by Seth Murray Maltby.

                          "Rochester. March 21, 1849."

(To Rev. Jonathan (4) Maltby,

New Haven, Conn.)

"My Dear Uncle.

I received your letter about three months after Cate-- My sister Saltar have explained to you the cause of my delay.

You have too, been called to mourning the loss of a "loved one with whom you had lived over three score years--May our heavenly Father be your support in the Day of affliction and "lift the light of his countenance upon you and give you peace."

I immediately after receiving your letter, I wrote to William Maltby as you requested but have waited in vain for an answer. I fear that he never received it.

On a visit to Le Roy last Jany. I found a young Lady at the Seminary named Huldah Maltby, a daughter of Stephen Maltby of Pine Hill in the town of Elba, Genesse County, N.Y.--She says her Grandfather's name is or was, William Maltby--and is perhaps the same that we supposed was in Bloomfield.

There is a family of our name in Hamilton and I have endeavoured to ascertain their pedigree--I hope you will continue and persevere in your historical account of the Maltby family--we may not be able to show ourselves in the line of earthly Royality--I think there is no family that have shown superior claims to the line of the "Royal Priesthood."

It seems at least, so far as I have knowledge to have been "a chosen generation" in the "holy nation."

I think however if they had continued in the visible succesion of the "Holy, Apostilic Church" it would have been far easier for you to trace their genealogy.

Now we find them Congregationalists, Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists, and there is one Episcoleman! and I hope you will forgive him--this pleasantage--and believe he loves the same blessed Saviour-- the same blessed Gospel of---the same truth, "in the love of it." and also that he loves his dear aged Uncle and the dear relations with the fondest affection--though they be not visibly infolded with him.

Remember me to my cousins all around you--I hope I shall see some of them here this summer. May God bless them all!

I was sorry to hear that the apples I sent you and Holmes and Lucius did not arrive. We are all well.

I am truly and affectionately your friend and Nephew

                               Seth M. Maltby."

Note. I have before me, a gift from Mary Love Maltby (Mrs.Higby), a photograph of VI.947, Seth Murray Maltby, who died aged 23. He has a very broad forehead, eyebrows low over the eyes, hair and eyes, apparently, dark; nose long and straight. He is wearing a very high white collar, which is open very wide, and a bow-tie stock. The waist coat is a deep V shape--a very appealing picture. On the back Mrs. Higby has written:--

"Seth Murray Maltby, eldest living son of Seth Murray Maltby, who was eldest son of General Isaac Maltby, whose wife was only child of General Seth Murray, whose wife was Jonannah Dickinson, whose father was General Lemuel Dickinson." The photograph was taken by "L. Sherman, No. 18 West Main Street, Rochester, N.Y."
